My Site Specific Proposal

For my site specific project, I was thinking of using a site where the public are the reason as to why it has been built and also where they are highly needed to keep the building in working order. The site I have chosen in Swansea town is The Quadrant Shopping Centre, it is a very spacious area that is well laid out and is perfect to hold a site specific exhibition as it will be surrounded by the public at all times.

The exhibition pieces within my group will be able to get a high viewing rate from the public, not only from advertising, but also because the quadrant is a highly used facility for the people of Swansea town. I believe that the piece should revolve around the busy lives of the people in Swansea and document by using a range of media formats and different instalments.

The Swansea Quadrant was originally built in the 1890’s by an architect ‘Old Nick’. The story began when Old Nick’s architectural plans for rebuilding St. Mary's Church of Swansea got rejected.  He decided to invest on the land opposite the church and demolish all the cottage buildings that were already on that land and rebuilt an ugly structure that was now a home to Old Nick, who was now known as the devil of Swansea Town.  In the year 1962, Old Nick’s ugly structure was demolished when the rebuilding of St. Marys church began after the Blitz in 1941. Now, for historical authenticity, they have installed Swansea’s most loved and hated curiosity with the Quadrant’s white wall entrance.

After researching about the history of the Shopping Centre, it has really given me some very creative instalments the group can include within the pieces. The research on ‘Old Nick’ was very interesting to read and I believe this history will compliment ideas well.  To my knowledge, I know that the Quadrant centre has electricity which will be needed for projecting images on walls or using lights for the evening. Problems that may be encountered are that the quadrant shuts at a certain time during the evening.

To find out if I could definitely use this space to show the groups site specific, we would all need to contact The Quadrant Centre in Swansea to ask for permission so that we could hold our two day exhibition.

So in conclusion, I believe the Quadrant in Swansea centre is a very interesting place to have the site specific project held as it includes historical facts, is very spacious and is easy to get to, However , there may also be a slight issue on the spacing we would be able to use as a group.
