Lately I have been noticing around the Swansea Town area, pieces of Art work which represent , in a way , a Site Specific exhibition. These pieces of Art were introduced to us earlier on this week which gave me in the intention to go out and investigate what really was behind all this work.
The project is called the 'Locws Project'. This project is basically created by artists that create temporary art projects across the whole city of Swansea. The artwork then represents culture, story or the heritage of the people in the town. By creating this project it provides up coming artists to get their work out to the public and also helps the Locws charity expand as a visual art charity.
A few of the art pieces that really interested me was a piece created by Jock Mooney called 'Swansea Kebab'. This piece was situated in the Castle Square in the town centre. With this art, he made a skewer of the Swansea Devil 'Old Nick' , Bonnie Tyler, Swansea Jack , Joe's Ice-cream and a headless sunbather which represented the history and fame of which Swansea has encountered over the years.
Another piece of art that really interested me was called 'An Accident...' created by Fiona Curran situated by St Mary's Church. This peculiar piece of work really had me thinking what it was really about, as I personally had no clue. The vibrant colouration of the wooden pieces represent a moment of explosion or collapse that has been restored. It is based all on the modern advertising industry. After reading the history about the cities Quadrant Centre and about 'Old Nick', this section of art work really had me understand the history of Swansea as it represents the blitz and the church being burnt down and restored.
More research on the 'Art Across The City' Coming in the next few Blog entries!
