Four walls, a floor and a ceiling

As part of our site specific project, we were all set a task to go to the area of our choice and take photographs for a mini project called ' Four walls, a floor and a ceiling'.  Seeing as the two choices of the yacht club in Mumbles and Bryn-mill park had been whittled down to just one site , this had made it easier for the group to start our investigation.

After finding out for definite that we were unable to use the Bryn-mill park area for our site specific project, we all came to a group decision that the yacht club in Mumbles would be the right area for the project. As a group we visited the area, taking photographs and documenting as to why this should be the best place to have the exhibition.  I personally, like I have said in previous blogs ,  really like the yacht club as it is in a very nice place and has a lot of potential.

For this ' Four walls, a floor and a ceiling' mini project, we were all asked to individually document the area that we had eventually chosen by taking photographs in the different areas of the site. In the yacht club, I found that it involved many different areas where other members of the group could use for their projects and also that the yacht club was very spacious which would be at an advantage when members of the public come to visit the projects.

In total , I had taken around one hundred photographs of the area , starting from the top on the sun roof and working my way down back through the front doors to photograph the surroundings.

The Area on the sun roof

I found that the sun roof held a lot of potential for the site specific project as you can see the whole of Swansea bay from that area, which could be then used as a backdrop for projects and also just for nice scenery whilst viewing other members of the groups instalments.

The advantages that I find of being on the sun roof is the amazing atmosphere surrounding the area and also it is very spacious. There are a few disadvantages of the sun roof area though that I would most definitely take into account when thinking about where to place my project.

As the sun roof is outside , and we are in Wales , there would be a high risk of rain fall when the exhibition is all up, which would damage members of the groups work and also will decrease the amount of people who would come to visit the work.

I chose this photograph to document about the disadvantages of using the sun roof , despite the nice landscapes surrounding the area the rainfall will most definitely ruin the exhibition and is not worth taking the risk.

Also , another disadvantage about using the sunroof is how people actually get to the top. There are very steep steps leading to the sun roof which I find a hazard for young children and the elderly and also passers by.

The photograph here can clearly show that the steps leading to the sun roof are not acceptable when inviting people to see the the work.

Some of the photographs that I had taken on the sunroof were really inspirational on what to focus on when creating my project. As the yacht club is around the sea area I had taken photographs of the Swansea Bay. I also found little objects and also a building where they store the radio for the boats which I found very interesting.

I found this radio hut very interesting to photograph as it included various amounts of communication objects which they use to contact yachts that are out to sea. There were also various object surrounding the hut such as old sails for the boats and also ash trays on the floor, which really gave the community edge to the area but yet still the boating atmosphere.  I could approach my work towards this area of the site as I could have my project held in the inside of the radio hut, that way if we do have rain , my work would be protected. The only disadvantage would be the access and also the viewing.

Inside the Yacht Club

The inside of the Yacht club is very spacious and contains a lot of small detail which gives off a lot of power as to what the site is all about. Around the area are objects like sailing photographs, medals and plaques and various other items.

I took this photograph as the plaques that are hanging above the bar area are really interesting and also the yacht steering wheel really gives the space a nautical appearance. Taking photographs of the plaques and other achievements that the yacht club have achieved will really give the space a lot of credit for the work that they do, especially as they are all hard working individuals .

To me , for a site , it is the small details that really give off the most depth and interest as they are so informative in their own ways. For example this photograph of the knots that sailors carry out when on a shift on the boat, the little detail within the whole frame give off so much power and interest, also this image of the trophies shows how much effort and time the sailing company go through and that hard work really does pay off. Due to these small details through out the yacht club , it really makes the area look interesting everywhere you look as there is  always something different to view.

The small details within the yacht club.

By viewing all these little details within the yacht club, it gives a homely feel to the whole of the club which allows the club to be inviting to the public and is not in any way intimidating. I personally prefer the small detail within the area rather than the whole room! The small objects are the things that make the room.

Here is a photograph of one view of the main rooms in the yacht club. As you can see it includes a bar which is another advantage on why this site was chosen, our guests to the site will be able to have a casual drink whilst looking around at the work that is being presented. Also in the area there are plenty of seating areas where they can just relax and look at the Swansea Bay from the windows.

I believe that the yacht club is a very great area to have the exhibition as it has everything that is needed. It has a bar for refreshments , seating areas both inside and outside, it is very spacious, also the site has a kitchen where they make food for guests.

Whilst walking around the building I had noticed that the rooms had speakers on the walls , which is fantastic if anybody in the group would like to use music or sound effects for their work at all.

As well as taking photographs inside the building, I also decided to take photographs in the foyer and the outside just to give an insight on what the building looks like and also what it contains.

All in all , I believe that we have chosen a very good place to have our exhibition and after analysing and documenting the area through using photographs I have made a clear insight on what is able to be used. The manager of the Yacht club told us that we can use the whole building , so there is a variety of rooms to choose from , that each have an individual taste to them by the use of small detail.  After completely analysing the building I have also gathered ideas on what to focus on through my project! so this building has also been inspirational to me!
